The United States (US) has announced that the Russian mercenary group Wagner is planning to send an air defense system to Hezbollah, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.
"The Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary organization, plans to provide an air defense system to the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah, American officials said, citing intelligence. The Russian SA-22 system they plan to send uses anti-aircraft missiles and air defense weapons to intercept aircraft," the WSJ said.
In the same article, WSJ wrote that US officials believe that the Wagner paramilitary group, which played a key role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, could provide Hezbollah with anti-aircraft systems as a second front against Israel emerges.
Israel has complete air superiority in the region. Military experts believe that if the Russian SA-22 system is given to Hezbollah, this balance in the region will change against Israel. According to the Times of Israel, Israel has been carrying out strikes in Syria for a long time to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah.
The SA-22, also known as Pantsir, is a truck-mounted short-range air defense battery capable of destroying aircraft, helicopters, UAV ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.
