Saudi Arabia is preparing to send a female astronaut into space for the first time. The launch, scheduled for Sunday, will last 8 days.

Rayyanah Barnawi, a scientist specializing in cancer stem cell research, is the first female astronaut to go to the International Space Station (ISS), where Saudi Arabia will focus on advancing breast cancer research. 

Barnawi, 34, will serve as an expert in the operation run by Axiom Space, the global commercial space station where various medical experiments will be conducted.

She will be the first female astronaut sent into space by Saudi Arabia.

The launch operation, scheduled for Sunday, will last eight days.

Two Saudi astronauts in Riyadh expressed pride in their country as they prepare to launch into space.
