The debate on the origin of the coronavirus, which has caused more than 7 million deaths in the world and has been in effect since 2019, has recently flared up again. Both the psychological and economic effects of the virus, which emerged with different variants, especially Omicron, but were brought under control with measures, still could not be completely erased. How the coronavirus, which was first seen in Wuhan, China, spread, is still not fully determined.
The coronavirus has also been added to the political tension between the USA and China in recent days. While it was discussed whether the virus leaked from the laboratory in China, which is considered to be the 'starting point', or whether it originated from the animal market, a recent news by the US newspaper Wall Street Journal had a great impact. The WSJ announced a new information obtained from US sources about China in its news titled “The Department of Energy says that the Covid-19 pandemic is most likely the source of the laboratory leak”.
In the news, as a result of the new research of the US Department of Energy, it was stated that the virus most likely spread from a laboratory in Wuhan, and it was claimed that the virus was 'man-made'.
While the details of the preliminary report reached by WSJ were awaited, a new statement came from the FBI. Christopher Wray, Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), stated that the coronavirus "probably leaked from a laboratory under the control of the Chinese government".
Speaking to Fox News, Wray said, "The FBI has been thinking for a while that the pandemic probably started as a result of a laboratory-related event," and stated that this is the opinion of the FBI as an institution. Thus, for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the FBI has revealed its opinion on the origins of the virus.
The FBI Director also blamed China, saying, "China is doing its best to thwart attempts to identify the origins of the pandemic and blur the facts. This is very unfortunate for all of us."
