Protests about the Greek train accident continue. 40,000 people, attended by transport workers, teachers and students, gathered to protest.

The head of the train drivers' union on Wednesday reported that workers had reported the inadequacies of the rail transport systems, but received no feedback.

"The freight train and passenger train collided because, quite simply, the safety systems at the site which protect against human error were not working," said train drivers union head Kostas Genidounias as rail workers rallied in central Athens.

"We drivers have filed complaints about these things, we have gone on strike about it, we have made warnings, we have protested, but unfortunately no one listened to us,” Genidounias added. "They told us we were lying, we were slanderous, we had other interests, in the end it showed that the workers were right and unfortunately we experienced this tragedy."

STRIKE CONTINUES

Railroad workers have been protesting since Thursday, March 2, when the accident took place. The rail network came to a standstill because of the strikes.

Rail unions and industry sources have pointed to a remote surveillance and signalling system, which controls train traffic and guides drivers, saying it had not been functioning properly for years.

Even though Prime Minister Mitsotakis said that this situation was caused by human accident, he acknowledged some of the criticism by stating that the system did not work properly.
