Frankfurt fans riot in Naples after the match

Violent clashes broke out between supporters of Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday. In the first match, there were violent incidents among the fans. The incident took place after Italian authorities forced German fans into the stadium due to safety concerns.

Car windows were broken and fans hurled flares, chairs and other objects as innocent bystanders took shelter in bars and restaurants. A police car and other vehicles were set alight.

The police managed to suppress the events and sent the fans to their hotels.

“I’m monitoring what has happened on our streets. An unacceptable climate of guerrilla warfare,” the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, said on Twitter. “My thanks go to the police forces who acted to guarantee the safety of the citizens. I appeal to Neapolitans, be responsible.”

No injuries were reported.

Fans of both teams clashed prior to the first leg in Frankfurt with police having labelled that game as high risk.

Frankfurt, Europa League winners last year, are enjoying their best run in decades on the pitch with fans offering strong support in away matches.
