Lawyer Nadia Kahf became the first hijab-wearing judge in the United States.

After being appointed to his new position in the state of New Jersey, Kahf took an oath by pressing his hand on the Holy Quran inherited from his grandmother.

"I am very happy and also very honored," said Kahf, 50, who will serve in Passaic County.

SYRIAN ORIGIN

Nadia Kahf immigrated to the USA from Syria when she was 2 years old.

She had been working in Islamic foundations in the country for a long time.

Kahf became the first state judge in the US to wear a headscarf, but she is not the first Muslim judge.

There are Muslim female judges serving in different regions in the USA.
