Negotiations begin for digital Schengen visa

The European Union (EU) has taken a new step to digitize Schengen visas instead of printing them on passports. It has been learned that negotiations will begin with the European Parliament on the final legal text.

Negotiations begin for digital Schengen visa

Within the scope of the proposal submitted by the European Union Commission in April 2022 for the digitization of visas, a new step has been taken regarding the change that envisages the digital issuance of Schengen visas, which are currently affixed to passports. The necessary negotiation authority for the digitization of Schengen visas was agreed. In this context, the Council will be able to start negotiations on the final legal text with the European Parliament on the transition to the digital Schengen visa.

PAYMENTS WILL ALSO BE DIGITAL

According to the news of Anadolu, if the proposal becomes law, Schengen visa applications will also be made digitally over the internet. For this, a "visa application platform" will be established. All documents will be uploaded digitally on this website, and visa fees will be paid on this website.

Only first-time applicants, those who will renew their biometric information and new passport holders will go to consulates or visa centers.

Visas will be delivered to the applicant in digital format, in the form of a 2D barcode and signed in an encrypted form.

With digital visas, the EU aims to prevent fraud and the use of stolen visas.

The bill on the digitization of Schengen visas was approved by the relevant committee of the European Parliament. It is expected that the final form of the legal text will be given after the deliberations of the Council and the Parliament.
