The number of dead and injured in the conflict in Sudan rises

The balance sheet in the conflicts between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is getting heavier day by day. The international community, especially Türkiye, calls for a "ceasefire" to the warring parties.

The number of dead and injured in the conflict in Sudan rises

About 300 people lost their lives in the ongoing clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), said on Twitter, "The situation in Sudan is increasingly concerning and heart breaking. Almost 300 people died so far, and over 3000 are injured. I condemn all loss of life, especially attacks on civilians and health care."

CIVILS HAVE DIFFICULTY TO ACCESS THE MOST ESSENTIAL SERVICES

The lack of safe access to electricity, food, water, personnel and dwindling medical supplies makes it nearly impossible for many healthcare facilities to operate when there are thousands of casualties just in need of emergency care.

The WHO chief reiterated his call for all parties to heed the call for a humanitarian pause, saying this would allow those stranded in the conflict to seek refuge.

The RSF accused the army of attacking its forces south of Khartoum with light and heavy weapons, while the army declared the paramilitary force an "insurgent" group, saying it was "spreading lies".

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IS CONCERNED ABOUT DEVELOPMENTS IN SUDAN

The African Union, the United Nations and the international community called on Sudan's warring parties to create the necessary conditions for civilians to access critical services.

Sudan has had no functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok's transitional government and declared a state of emergency in what has been described as a "coup" by political forces.

The transition period in Sudan, which began in August 2019, was scheduled to end with elections to be held in early 2024.

CALL FOR A "CEASEFIRE" FROM TÜRKİYE

Türkiye is negotiating a ceasefire with the warring parties in Sudan.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, “Both sides are our brothers in Sudan. Why should we take sides here? We are negotiating with both sides, we are negotiating to stop the conflict."
