South Sudanese authorities have made one of the strangest police statements ever made, confirming that they have arrested a cow for the murder of a 12-year-old boy.

The animal, held in custody at a police station, will face a serious prison sentence if found guilty.

South Sudanese police spokesman Elijah Mabor confirmed that the cow has since been detained at a police station in Rumbek Central District.

This incident, in which an animal was arrested, charged and imprisoned, is surprisingly not the first in the country.

A month ago, a coach was arrested and accused of killing a 45-year-old woman.

In the brutal attack, a woman named Adhieu Chaping was repeatedly struck in the ribs by the animal and died.

Speaking at the time of the coach's arrest, a police spokesman said, "The owner is innocent, but the coach who committed the crime deserves to be arrested. Our job as police is to ensure security."

Last week, the same coach was sentenced to hard labor at a military camp, where he would spend three years in prison.

The animal that killed Chaping is expected to be handed over to the Chaping family when released, in line with the laws and customs of the country.

Any pet that caused the death of a person was reportedly given as compensation to the victim's family after serving the sentence.
