United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said 83 people lost their lives in the floods caused by heavy rains in Ethiopia and Somalia.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) announced on Monday that the floods experienced after the extraordinary rains in Ethiopia and its surroundings in the last days caused great destruction and loss of life. In Somalia, which was most affected by the flood, 45 people lost their lives and more than 23,000 animals perished.

99,000 HECTARES ARE UNDER WATER

At least 99,000 hectares of agricultural land in Somalia were flooded. In Ethiopia, the death toll was announced as 38. In the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, 30 people lost their lives. In the Oromia region of the country, 8 people lost their lives and 5,803 people were evacuated, UNOCHA said. There was extensive damage to the infrastructure of roads, schools and bridges in the region.

Authorities warned the people of the region to be careful against epidemics as well as cholera.
