It was learned that the boat carrying approximately 500 irregular migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea was lost. Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesperson for the Mediterranean Coordination Office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said on his Twitter account, "There is still no information about the fate of the boat carrying 500 migrants whose trace has disappeared. The Emergency team continues to search for vital support."

Di Giacomo called for the necessary support for search and rescue activities to reach the missing people. It was noted that the Italian non-governmental organization Emergency and other NGO vessels rescuing migrants in the region were searching for the missing boat.

The non-governmental organization "Alarm Phone", which announces the calls for help from migrants in the Mediterranean on social media, announced on Twitter on May 23 that the boat with about 500 people who reportedly fled Libya had stopped its engines due to a malfunction and was drifting in the sea and called for urgent help.
