The Great Mosque in the city of Granada in the Andalusian region of southern Spain has been attracting a lot of interest over the past few years. Almost every Friday in the region, a Spanish citizen converts to Islam, and after today's Friday prayers, Jose Miguel converted to Islam.
Umar del Pozo, President of the Islamic Community Association of Spain and the Great Mosque of Granada Foundation, said, "Almost every Friday, a Spaniard becomes a Muslim in our mosque. There is a significant increase in the number of Spaniards converting to Islam, especially after the pandemic. This is a situation that makes us happy and proud."
"About 36,000 Muslims live in the cities and districts of Granada. Around 3,700 of them are Spaniards who have converted to Islam and their third generation children."
In Spain, the call to prayer is only heard loudly from a minaret in Granada's Grand Mosque. The mosque in the medieval Muslim neighborhood of Albacin, Granada's top tourist attraction, was built in 2003.
Mohamed Ajana, Secretary of the Islamic Commission of Spain, said in March that the Muslim population in the country had increased 10-fold in the last 30 years, exceeding 2.5 million, and according to unofficial figures, this number had reached 3 million.
Mostly Muslims of Moroccan, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Senegalese and Algerian origin live in Spain. The Muslim population mostly resides in industrially developed regions such as Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia and Madrid.
