The forest fire on Spain's La Palma Island continues. The fire, which started in the El Pinar de Puntagorda forest area in the north of the island, reached the town of Tijarafe in the south.
Due to the fire, 4,500 hectares turned to ashes, while 4,255 people were evacuated from the region. Fernando Clavijo, President of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, said that there is resistance to the evacuation of homes, but their priority is to save lives.
Clavijo cited the wind and the heat wave due to climatic conditions as the reason for the spread of the fire. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with Clavijo and expressed solidarity with those affected by the fire and said he would put all necessary means at the disposal of the La Palma authorities.
The Spanish army has deployed 150 firefighters to extinguish the fire, while the Red Cross has set up a facility to help evacuees.
The firefighting efforts will continue today with the participation of reinforcements.
