At least eight people were killed when a fuel truck in southwestern Nigeria exploded while trying to drain gasoline from the surrounding area after an accident, police said on Monday.
According to the statement, the truck was involved in an accident in Ondo state on Sunday night when it left the road and overturned on its side.
"Some people went there to scoop fuel. In the process, the tanker exploded," said Ondo state police spokesman Fumilayo Odunlami-Omisanya.
This was not the first explosion in Nigeria, as the rail infrastructure is old and inadequate. Accidents involving fuel trucks transported by road are common across the country.
