An asylum-seeker boat departing from the Tunisian port of Safakes sank off the coast of Lampedusa Island in Italy. It was announced that 41 asylum seekers on the boat lost their lives. 4 people on the boat were rescued by the coast guard.
While being brought to Lampedusa Island, 4 people from Ivory Coast and Guinea stated that there were 45 people on the boat,including 3 children, and said that after a 6-hour journey, the boat sank under the influence of strong waves and only 15 people had life jackets.
It was learned that the boat was heading towards Italy's Sicily Island.
