Imam-i Azam Mosque in Netherlands's Culemborg targeted in apparent attack

In a disconcerting incident, the Imam-ı Azam Mosque, located in the Dutch city of Culemborg and affiliated with the Netherlands Islamic Foundation (HDV), fell victim to a vicious attack. The shocking event prompted an investigation as Selcuk Demirci, the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Imam-ı Azam Mosque Foundation, shed light on the distressing situation.

According to Demirci, the assailant infiltrated the mosque's premises by scaling the fence at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday night. Subsequent examination of the security camera footage unveiled a harrowing act, where the perpetrator damaged ten window panes of the mosque employing an unidentified object.

At present, the motives behind the attack remain unclear. Demirci offered a potential hypothesis, suggesting that it could be linked to recent developments in the Middle East. He revealed that the mosque had previously received warnings from the HDV following the Israeli attacks on Gaza, urging them to bolster their security measures. Moreover, during Holy Birth Week or Mawlid an-Nabi which is the observation of the day that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born, the mosque received offensive letters. Nevertheless, this recent attack represents the first time they have encountered such a violent act.

MOSQUE CONGREGATION CONDEMNS

The mosque administrators unequivocally condemned the incident and have since been collaborating closely with local authorities to enhance security measures. Demirci emphasized the mosque's desire for peace and harmony within their city, emphasizing that they maintain no adversarial stance towards any individual or religious community, and uphold a stance of non-discrimination.

PERPETRATOR APPREHENDED

In a development that underscores the responsiveness of law enforcement, Demirci confirmed that, after promptly reporting the incident to the police and sharing the camera footage, the assailant responsible for the attack has been apprehended and detained.

INCREASING ATTACKS ON MOSQUES IN NETHERLANDS

The HDV issued a written statement addressing the concerning trend of escalating mosque attacks in the Netherlands. These incidents, which initially began with derogatory letters, have now escalated to physical assaults, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and security within the community.
