United Nations Security Council decides to lift arms embargo on Somalia that has been in place since 1992

UNSC unanimously approves resolution to lift 31-Year arms embargo on Somalia

The fifteen-member United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday approved a draft resolution lifting the arms embargo on Somalia after 31 years, and the resolution passed unanimously.

"The main purpose of this resolution is to reduce the threat of al-Shabaab," the resolution said, adding that the ongoing threat of al-Shabaab to Somalia and regional security was a matter of concern.

Speaking after the vote, Somalia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman, said the resolution would contribute to Somalia's fight against security threats.

The UNSC has imposed an arms embargo on Somalia since 1992 to prevent weapons, ammunition and bomb-making materials from falling into the hands of al-Shabaab.
