Türkiye denounces veto power at UN Security Council, advocates for Palestinian rights

Türkiye strongly denounced the use of veto power within the United Nations Security Council Wednesday, emphasizing its obstruction to Palestine's rightful status among countries.

Ahmet Yildiz, Türkiye’s permanent representative to the U.N., stressed that the veto should not impede the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people nor hinder an immediate cease-fire.

Yildiz underscored Türkiye's steadfast support for Palestine's bid for full U.N. membership, urging swift action from the international community to address the Palestinian issue and uphold their fundamental rights.

He lamented the deadlock within the council, labeling it a grave setback to the U.N.'s foundational principles of maintaining global peace and security.

Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and condemning the violent displacement of Palestinians, Yildiz emphasized the imperative of implementing relevant Council resolutions and International Court of Justice measures.

He vehemently opposed any military actions targeting Rafah in southern Gaza, asserting the applicability of international law to all nations without discrimination.

Yildiz cautioned that disregarding international law would only escalate instability, aggression, and conflict, expressing concerns about the regional repercussions of the conflict.

He called for international intervention to ensure safe humanitarian access to Gaza and reiterated Türkiye's staunch support for the U.N. Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), condemning any smear campaigns against it.

Decision to join Gaza case at ICJ

On May 1, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Türkiye had decided to intervene in South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Article 63 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice grants Türkiye the right to intervene in the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel.
