Russia has intensified its attacks on its neighbor ahead of a widely anticipated counterattack by Ukraine, sending drones and missiles almost nightly to target Kyiv and other areas over the past week.

Ukrainian officials said Russia had hit a building in the Dnipropetrovsk region with a drone, launching the third night strikes on Kyiv in the past six days.

Air raid sirens went off for hours in Kyiv, the surrounding area and much of eastern Ukraine, and the sky only cleared towards dawn, according to Reuters.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command said its forces had destroyed 21 of the 26 Iranian-made Shahed drones used by Russia.

Kyiv officials, on the other hand, announced that the air defense systems neutralized the missiles sent to the city without any reports of loss of life or destruction.

"All enemy targets were identified and shot down in the airspace around the capital," the Kyiv military administration said in the Telegram messaging app, conveying the first details.
