After 43 years, final whistle blows for 'Captain Tsubasa'

The Japanese comic book series "Captain Tsubasa" has reached the end of its 43-year adventure with the announcement that its writer Takahashi Yoici will retire.

According to the official Kyodo agency, 63-year-old Takahashi announced that he will retire but will continue his "productive activities."

"I still like to draw illustrations and think of stories," Takahashi said, adding that he will plan stories based on the "Captain Tsubasa" character.

State broadcaster NHK reported that the globally popular comic book series has sold more than 90 million copies in more than 50 countries over 43 years.

The latest installment of the series, "Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun," was released last week. It follows the Japanese character's adventures with the national under-23 soccer team.

Takahashi announced in January 2024 that he would end the series due to his loss of physical strength and the digitalization of the comics market.

The first "Captain Tsubasa" comic series was published in 1981 in the weekly magazine Shukan Shonen Jump.
