Balkan, Mediterranean skies to dim during total eclipse

As North America prepares for a total solar eclipse on April 8, excitement is also building up in parts of Europe, including the Balkans and the Mediterranean region.

While these areas won’t experience the total eclipse, they will witness a partial eclipse, which will connect them to this extraordinary astronomical event.

Will solar eclipse be visible in Europe?

The western parts of Europe, particularly the British Isles and Ireland, will observe a partial eclipse at sunset.

According to projections, the partial eclipse will start around 8:52 p.m. CET and conclude at 9:51 p.m. CET. Regions such as County Mayo in Ireland are expected to have the best views in Europe, with the Moon obscuring more than 20% of the Sun.

Solar eclipse in Türkiye, Mediterranean region

Though the total eclipse will not be visible from Türkiye, it is generating significant interest in the Balkans or the broader Mediterranean area. This partial glimpse into the eclipse allows these regions to participate in a global astronomical phenomenon.

The eclipse is stirring up enthusiasm among European scientists and educators. Greek scientists, for instance, are planning to travel to North America to observe and analyze the total eclipse.

Digital options are available to join in the experience for those unable to witness the eclipse firsthand.

NASA will offer extensive live streaming coverage from 1 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CET), featuring telescope views and expert commentary. This initiative allows individuals in Europe and other parts of the world to participate virtually.
Future Astronomical Events

The next major solar eclipse expected to be visible from parts of the Mediterranean and the Balkans will occur on August 12, 2026. This event will offer another opportunity for these regions to connect with the cosmic dynamics of solar eclipses.
