Türkiye's applies to join international lunar science station

Türkiye has taken a significant leap in its space exploration ambitions by applying to participate in the International Lunar Science Station (ILSS).

This initiative is a joint venture by Russia and China and represents a new chapter in Türkiye's quest for a robust presence in space research and exploration.

Rosatom is spearheading the ILSS, also known as the Russia Orbital Station, with plans to establish it in orbit between 2027 and 2032. The project reflects the growing collaboration in space ventures between Russia and China, cemented by an agreement in February 2020.

On this development, China's Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui commented, "The memorandum of understanding was prepared in line with an agreement to collaborate in creating a joint data center for Moon and deep space exploration."

The director of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Space Research confirmed Türkiye's application to the project, citing Türkiye's emerging role in global space endeavors.

This move aligns with Türkiye's recent achievements in space, notably marked by astronaut Alper Gezeravci's journey to the International Space Station on Jan. 20, 2024, as part of the Ax-3 Mission.

"Representing my country on this meaningful mission and carrying our flag to the International Space Station is a matter of pride as we step into the Türkiye Century,"  Gezeravci said.

Given the rapid developments in the global space sector, Türkiye's decision to join the ILSS is timely. Companies like Space X are making breakthroughs with reusable rockets and planning lunar tourism, while NASA's recent success with the Perseverance rover on Mars illustrates the dynamic nature of space exploration.

By applying to the ILSS, Türkiye not only seeks to enhance its scientific and technological capabilities but also to join an elite group of nations committed to advancing human understanding of space. This move could lead to significant opportunities for Türkiye in space technology and research and bolster international cooperation in space exploration.
