Türkiye-themed iftar event held at Trafalgar Square in London

As part of the traditional Ramadan Tent Project event that has become a tradition in the U.K., a collective iftar program themed around "Türkiye" was organized at the famous Trafalgar Square in the capital city of London, sponsored by the Presidency of Communications of Türkiye.

In its 11th year, the iftar program held at the renowned square in the capital city saw the participation of Muslims from various nations, as well as individuals from other religions and beliefs.

Among the attendees was the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Before the iftar meal, the call to prayer echoed in the square, followed by prayers. Attendees broke their fasts with dates after the call to prayer and then performed the evening prayer in the congregation.

Guests enjoyed a taste of Turkish cuisine, followed by a special gift: festive red bags from the Presidency of Communications containing Turkish delight and a holiday greeting.

'Antidote, our religion of peace'

Speaking at the platform set up in the square for the event, Mayor Khan mentioned that the "Open Iftar" event brought together more than 10,000 people over 28 days.

Expressing gratitude to the volunteers who contributed to the event, Khan said, "The joy of these open iftar events is sharing our religion with non-Muslims. These iftars are the best antidote against those who spread hatred. The antidote is our religion of peace. The antidote is sharing bread together. The antidote is shutting the mouths of those who spread myths about Islam."

'Proud to showcase Ramadan'

The founder of the Ramadan Tent Project, Omar Salha, expressed pride in organizing the "Open Iftar" event, stating: "We are doing this because we are proud of our society. We are proud to showcase Ramadan. We are proud to host people of all faiths and non-believers and to allow them to discover why Ramadan is so important for millions of Muslims living in the U.K. and millions more celebrating Ramadan around the world."

A digital screen van with the message 'Celebrating the beauty of Ramadan and our shared heritage from Türkiye to the United Kingdom' drove around Trafalgar Square

Thanking the London Yunus Emre Institute (YEE) for promoting Turkish culture, music, cuisine, and heritage in the U.K., Salha continued his speech: "Lastly, I would like to extend our greatest thanks to the Presidency of Communications of the Republic of Türkiye, they sent you a beautiful gift as a gesture of kindness. All these red bags are from the Presidency of Communications."

Spreading the spirit of Ramadan

The Ramadan Tent Project, launched in the U.K. in 2013, provides free iftar meals to the public throughout Ramadan as part of its "Open Iftar" programs. Sponsored by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities and YEE, the iftar events aim to bring communities together and spread the spirit of Ramadan.
