Excavations begin at historic Meliksah Baths in Türkiye’s capital Ankara
Excavation work has started at the historical Meliksah Bath in Ankara's Cubuk district under the Presidency of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
A ceremony was held to mark the start of excavation work at the Meliksah Bath, a 2,000-year-old Roman-era monument known to have been used as a healing and health center in the Meliksah neighborhood of Ankara, the capital of Türkiye.
In his speech at the ceremony, Cubuk Mayor Baki Demirbas said that he believes that artifacts to be unearthed will make a great contribution to tourism of the district.
Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University, Department of Archaeology Faculty Member, Associate Professor Yusuf Albayrak stated that the name of the bath may change in light of coins and inscriptions that may be found during the dig.
Albayrak stated that the bath complex consists of different sections such as temperature, warmth, pool, treatment and massage sections.
With the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, excavations will be carried out by faculty members and students of the Department of Archaeology under the direction of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
The excavations aim to unearth the main bath complex.
Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University’s Rector Professor Ali Cengiz Koseoglu and Cubuk District Governor Adem Keles also attended the ceremony.
