Ukrainian Special Forces claimed that Admiral Viktor Sokolov, Commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, was killed in the attack on the Crimean port of Sevastopol.
According to Reuters, the Russian Defence Ministry did not respond to the agency's question on whether it could confirm or deny the report. Commenting on the attack on September 22 in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in violation of international law, the Ukrainian Special Forces said the attack targeted a meeting of the Russian Navy's leadership.
"Following the attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, 34 officials were killed, including the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet," the Ukrainian Special Forces said in a statement on the Telegram channel.
“105 invaders were injured. The headquarters building could not be restored,” it added.
On the other hand, it is not clear how Ukraine obtained information on the number of dead and wounded.
The Special Forces had also made a statement on September 23, claiming that people, including the fleet's senior leaders, were killed and wounded in Ukraine's attack on the headquarters. Making a statement about the operation called “Crab Trap”, the Special Forces claimed that the operation was timed to coincide with a gathering of senior figures of the Russian Navy and that dozens of people, including the fleet's senior leaders, were killed and wounded as a result of the attack.
"Today afternoon, the Kyiv regime launched a missile attack on the city of Sevastopol. While the attack was repelled, 5 missiles were shot down by air defense systems. As a result of the attack, the historical headquarters building of the Black Sea Navy was damaged," the statement said by the Russian Ministry of Defence regarding the attack.
With this, it was reported that no news was received from a Russian soldier after the attack.
