Kim Jong Un inspects 'super-large' rockets amid rising tensions

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the firing of "super-large" multiple rocket launchers in what state media described as a simulation of a nuclear counterattack against potential enemies.

This latest demonstration follows a series of tests and threats that have raised regional tensions.

Rocket launchers blur lines between artillery, ballistic missiles

The launches, spotted by the South Korean and Japanese militaries, took place near Pyongyang toward the eastern seas.

Analysts say North Korea's artillery rockets, including the multiple 600 mm rocket launchers tested, blur the distinction between traditional artillery systems and ballistic missiles because of their self-propelled and guided capabilities.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Monday's launches showcased North Korea's nuclear weapons management system, referred to as "Haekbangashoe" or "nuclear trigger."

Kim Jong Un reportedly expressed his satisfaction with the accuracy of the rocket launchers and likened them to a "sniper rifle."

North Korea's state media reported that the exercise was aimed at demonstrating the strength and diversity of North Korea's nuclear forces amid deepening tensions with the United States and South Korea.

North Korea's tests raise regional tensions

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff noted the projectiles traveled about 300 kilometers (186.4 miles) before colliding between the Korean Peninsula and Japan and that areas in South Korea could be targeted.

The launches coincided with the continuation of joint air exercises between South Korea and the United States to enhance their capacity to respond to North Korean threats.

In response to North Korea's provocations, the United States and South Korea have been strengthening their military exercises and nuclear deterrence strategies.

North Korea's recent weapons tests, including cruise missiles and solid-fuel medium-range missiles with hypersonic warhead capabilities, further underscore its continued efforts to develop its military capabilities.

While North Korea's ultimate goal appears to be to strengthen its position as a nuclear power in negotiations with the United States and South Korea, international concern over its increasing provocations persists.
