US Central Command neutralizes Houthi missiles, drones

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday that U.S.-led forces had intercepted an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) and four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from areas controlled by the Houthi group in Yemen.

The ASBM, likely targeting the U.S.-flagged MV Yorktown, was successfully intercepted by a coalition ship over the Gulf of Aden. No injuries or damage to U.S., coalition or commercial vessels were reported.

The four drones terminated by CENTCOM posed an imminent threat to ships in the area.

The Houthi group in Yemen has been targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea, particularly those owned or operated by Israeli companies or carrying goods to or from Israel in solidarity with Gaza.

Conscious of the strategic importance of the Red Sea as a vital sea route for oil and fuel shipments, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, a multinational mission aimed at countering Houthi attacks.
