The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office has officially determined the cause of death for Dana Carvey's son, Dex Carvey, as an accidental drug overdose. The report, obtained by People Magazine, reveals that Dex had fentanyl, ketamine and cocaine in his system at the time of his passing.

Dex's death at the age of 32 was initially announced by Carvey and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, in November 2023. The couple shared the grim news on Instagram, stating, "Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose." Their poignant message continued, remembering Dex's vibrant personality, "Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever."

In the aftermath of this tragedy, Carvey offered further insight into his family's grief and coping mechanisms on his podcast, Fly on the Wall. He said, "It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey. We're all together. And we do a lot of fun things. We hike; we go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving."

Carvey's decision to return to work after a hiatus was framed as part of his recovery process. The comedian explained, "I’m kind of on the pain train with about millions of other people on this planet." Emphasizing the therapeutic value of laughter, he spoke about reconnecting with his podcast co-host, David Spade.
