The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), which has unearthed many fossils with its archaeological activities, made a written statement on Wednesday that excited the archeology world.
According to the written statement, the team, including Belgian naturalist Olivier Lambert, found the 40-million-year-old fossil of possibly the heaviest animal that ever lived on earth in Peru.
With the discovery of fossils belonging to a whale species called "Perucetus colossus", the record for the blue whale, whose fossil was previously discovered and thought to be the heaviest animal, was broken.
While the weight of a blue whale can reach up to 100-190 tons, the weight of the creature whose fossil has been found is estimated to be between 85 and 340 tons.
