Google unveils Developer Preview for Android 15

Google has unveiled the Developer Preview for Android 15, offering developers an early look at the upcoming features and improvements.

This preview version is not intended for general use on phones or tablets. Still, it is specifically tailored for specific Google Pixel devices, such as the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

Users with other Android devices will have to wait for some more time.

Android 15 focuses on enhancing developer productivity and introducing new capabilities for creating enhanced media experiences.

It prioritizes optimizing battery usage, improving app performance, and emphasizing user privacy and security.

The rise in demand for larger-screen devices like tablets, foldable, and flippables presents new opportunities for developers.

Android 15 provides the necessary tools and libraries to help apps fully utilize these devices and leverage the latest advancements in AI.

Key features of Android 15 include enhancements to user privacy and security, such as updates to the Privacy Sandbox, Health Connect for managing health data securely, and the File Integrity Manager API for file protection.

Additionally, the release introduces features like in-app camera controls, support for Virtual MIDI 2.0 Devices, and improvements to the Dynamic Performance Framework for better interaction with device power and thermal systems.

The update also includes enhancements to OpenJDK APIs, improving NIO buffers, streams, security and more. These updates will be available on Android 12 and above devices through Google Play System updates.

Developers are encouraged to explore the new features by flashing a system image on compatible Pixel devices or using the Android Emulator in Android Studio, with the latest preview of Android Studio Jellyfish recommended for the best development experience.

Feedback from developers will be crucial in developing the final plan for the release of Android 15.
