U.S.-based artificial intelligence leader, OpenAI, continues to expand its presence in European media through strategic partnerships with renowned publications Le Monde and Prisa Media, which encompasses El Pais, Cinco Dias and El Huffpost.

The collaboration allows OpenAI access to the publications’ content, enhancing its AI models' training capabilities. OpenAI announced in a blog post on Wednesday that ChatGPT users will soon benefit from news content summaries sourced from these publishers and links to the original articles.

"In partnership with Le Monde and Prisa Media, our goal is to enable ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new ways that are interactive and insightful," remarked OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap.

Financial terms of the arrangement remain undisclosed.

Strategic partnership with OpenAI

"Our partnership with OpenAI is a strategic move to ensure the dissemination of reliable information to AI users, safeguarding our journalistic integrity and revenue streams in the process," said Louis Dreyfus, CEO of Le Monde.

Similarly, Carlos Nunez, CEO of Prisa Media, hailed the collaboration with OpenAI as a "step toward the future of news."

This alliance follows OpenAI's previous partnerships with the German multinational Axel Springer and The Associated Press, indicating the company's commitment to advancing AI tools across various industries, including journalism.

The collaboration with The Associated Press (AP), one of the largest and most respected news agencies globally, focused on utilizing AI to augment journalistic workflows. AP aimed to integrate AI tools, such as natural language processing and text generation, to assist journalists in researching, fact-checking and generating news articles.

“Our partnerships underscore our vision to develop advanced AI tools that empower industries, such as journalism, and solve problems that are otherwise out of reach,” OpenAI stated in the blog post.

A regulated development of AI

The announcement coincides with the European Parliament's final approval of comprehensive regulations governing artificial intelligence on Wednesday.

Artificial Intelligence Act, setting the stage for a regulated and human-centric development of AI, aims to ensure safety and compliance with fundamental rights and foster innovation while addressing the potential risks associated with the rapid evolution of technology.

The legislation agreed upon in negotiations with member states in December 2023, received overwhelming support in the European Parliament with 523 votes in favor, 46 against and 49 abstentions.

These regulations aim to address concerns over powerful AI systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Critics worry about the potential for misinformation and manipulation, especially given AI's ability to mimic human speech and writing styles.

These concerns underscore the need for robust oversight and accountability measures in the development and deployment of AI technologies.
