Türkiye's health tourism nets $2.3B in revenue in 2023

Türkiye's Ministry of Trade revealed that the country secured the seventh spot globally in health tourism, boasting 40 internationally accredited health care facilities.

These establishments contributed to a remarkable $2.3 billion in revenue in the field last year.

The ministry emphasized its support for initiatives that aim to enhance the value of health tourism within the country's economy, facilitate firms' international market access, and bolster competitiveness and branding efforts.

Notably, the "Heal in Türkiye" online portal, a cornerstone of Türkiye's health tourism sector, showcased 175 institutions operating in the health tourism sector on the portal, with a growing number of applications for inclusion.

It also mentioned that countries in the Middle East, along with Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, are among the top contributors to health tourism in Türkiye.

In 2023, Türkiye welcomed 1.4 million health tourists, significantly elevating revenue from health service exports to $2.3 billion compared to $1.9 billion in 2022.

Additionally, the ministry supported 12 trade and procurement delegations organized by sector representatives last year. It facilitated national participation in two major fairs in Berlin and London, pivotal events for the sector.

Health Tourism: Exploring the Present and Future Landscape

The ministry also underscored its assistance to firms operating in health service exports. This included support for participation in key tourism fairs and the inclusion of six projects under the Healthcare Industry Export Promotion Program (HISER).

Furthermore, seven brands received support under the TURQUALITY program, while another seven were backed through the Branding Program.

Financial support for firms engaged in health service exports surged to ₺733 million ($84.48 million) in 2023, marking a notable 281% increase from the previous year.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborating with sector stakeholders to elevate Türkiye's global share and value in health tourism, affirming its steady progress toward becoming a global hub in the field.
