Russia said on Monday it had begun conducting naval drills at sea, a day after NATO member states began their annual Baltic exercises.
The US Navy said it was participating in the Baltic exercises with 6,000 personnel, 50 ships and more than 45 aircraft, and Finland, a new NATO member, was participating for the first time as a member of the alliance.
The Russian military said up to 40 ships and boats, 25 aircraft and around 3,500 personnel will take part in its exercises, which are scheduled to last until June 15.
Moscow also began drills on Monday in the Sea of Japan and the far eastern Sea of Okhotsk, involving more than 60 warships and ships from the Pacific Fleet.
