The Kremlin said on Thursday that blocking Ukraine's membership in NATO was one of the key objectives of the war, which they described as a "special military operation".
"Otherwise it would pose a serious, significant threat to the security of our country," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed at a press briefing.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Thursday. Making a statement about this, the Kremlin said that it does not have any assessments about the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.
The visit is Stoltenberg's first to the country since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February last year.
While Ukraine was not close to the alliance before, it formally applied for NATO membership in last September. However, it is unclear whether his membership will be accepted and when it will be announced.
