PM Sanchez visits Ukraine as Spain assumes six-month rotating EU presidency

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez paid a visit to Kyiv on the day his country takes over the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union. Speaking to the Ukrainian parliament, Sanchez reiterated Europe's commitment to Ukraine's future EU membership.

During his visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told the Ukrainian parliament on Saturday that Ukraine will win the war. The Spanish Prime Minister reiterated the European commitment to Ukrainian future EU membership.

The visit comes on the same day that Spain takes over the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union. Sanchez said no one deserves more than Ukraine to get European Union status.

Sanchez added that this nomination process is not easy while the war continues.

The Spanish Prime Minister emphasized that there must be changes, reforms and sacrifices to become a member state and said that the process of becoming a member of the European Union has taught important lessons.

55 MILLION EUROS FROM SPAIN TO UKRAINE

"We need to make sure that the country is rebuilt, thus creating the conditions for its growth and prosperity. And we have already started," he said, announcing that his country would send another 55 million euros in aid to Ukraine. 

The Spanish PM wants the trip to be the first act of the Spanish presidency "to show with his presence the EU's undivided support to Ukraine in all fields: military, humanitarian and economic," his office said.

Sanchez is set to hold a joint press conference with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He said the war in Ukraine and its consequences would be a priority during the presidency.

Sanchez concluded his remarks by saying, "You are Europe. Glory to Ukraine!" he concluded.
