United Nations reacts to Armenia's so-called 'presidential election'

The so-called ‘presidential election’ organized by Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan received reactions from many countries. The United Nations (UN) called for respect for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and added that Yerevan and Baku should step up efforts to normalize relations.

Russia had brought a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh region problem between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In his speech, Vladimir Putin stated that Armenia recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and that the borders include Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to Anadolu Agency, the United Nations (UN) reaffirmed its commitment to Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity and demanded respect for UN Security Council resolutions in this context.

REACTION TO SO-CALLED ELECTION

At the daily press conference, UN SpokespersonStephane Dujarric answered a question regarding the so-called "presidential election" held in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, in the territories controlled by Armenian forces.

"UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to step up efforts to normalize relations, which would also be beneficial for peace and security in the region," Dujarric said.

'MUST BE RESPECTED'

"We would like to recall the UN Security Council resolutions on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. We call on everyone to fully respect them,” Dujarric said.

Illegitimate Armenian forces in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan held the so-called "Presidential election" on September 9  in the territories under its control.
