Türkiye's UN rep calls for enduring peace in Ukraine conflict

On Monday, Türkiye's permanent representative to the United Nations, Sedat Onal, emphasized the critical need for a "realistic and enduring" peace to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

During the 78th Session of the General Assembly addressing the Ukraine agenda, Onal stated, "The time has come for us to concentrate our efforts on defining a practical, enduring, and most importantly, a feasible peace."

He also called upon the international community to "acknowledge that a peace agreement necessitates the involvement of both sides to make headway in diplomatic endeavors."

As the Ukrainian conflict entered its third year, Onal highlighted that "the increasing human toll and physical devastation" were mounting daily, "with significant global implications for international peace and security."

He continued, noting that "a state of relative deadlock persists on the ground, with no apparent resolution in sight and minimal prospects for peace."

On Türkiye's stance, the diplomat affirmed that the country "has consistently taken a firm stand against this conflict and denounced the annexation of Ukrainian territories."

"Türkiye has supported Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political unity since the unlawful annexation of Crimea," he added.

Emphasizing the "appeal to uphold international law and the core principles of the UN Charter," Onal recalled Türkiye's consistent stance on the need to develop diplomatic pathways through negotiation.

Regarding the Black Sea Initiative, Onal stated that the stability of the initiative "remains crucial to prevent further escalation and disruption of the global agricultural market."

"Inspired by this initiative, we are currently exploring the potential for a revitalized security framework to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels in the Black Sea," he concluded.
