Efforts continue to maintain calm in the enduring Greek-Turkish dispute

Diplomatic endeavors in Greek-Turkish relations

Despite sharing nearly a millennium of history and culture, Türkiye and Greece, Mediterranean neighbors and NATO allies, have long found themselves at odds. Their bilateral relations have been marked by numerous obstacles, near-misses, and occasional attempts at reconciliation, including geographical initiatives. However, this year, both countries are optimistic about the prospect of peace.

A recent meeting between Greek and Turkish deputy foreign ministers, Alexandra Papadopoulou and Burak Akcapar, fostered a constructive atmosphere.

Despite this, leaks indicated unresolved matters such as disagreements over navigational telex (Navtex) exchanges and religious freedoms.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed optimism for progress during an iftar dinner, hinting at positive developments in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

However, Ankara's steadfast support for a two-state solution in Cyprus remains unchanged, signaling potential challenges ahead.

A recent incident at a U.N. meeting underscored Türkiye's sensitivity toward the Cyprus issue, indicating Ankara's stance as negotiations resume under U.N. auspices.

The upcoming pivotal meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Erdogan in Ankara is crucial for future ties between the two countries. Scheduled for May 7-8. the meeting is anticipated to address critical issues. Moreover, both leaders will reconvene during the NATO Summit in Washington in July, further highlighting efforts toward dialogue.

Meanwhile, diplomatic engagements continue, with additional discussions between foreign and deputy ministers planned to address the positive agenda and confidence-building measures.

Maintaining calm and fostering dialogue remain paramount for regional stability as tensions persist. The outcome of these high-level meetings will significantly influence the trajectory of Greek-Turkish relations and broader regional dynamics.
