Turkish Cyprus slams EU's statement on Cyprus issue

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar criticized the European Union's stance on the Cyprus issue, accusing the European Union of favoring the Greek Cypriot side.

Tatar emphasized the EU's lack of impartiality and argued that its admission of Greece violated its own standards. He traced the roots of the Cyprus issue to actions by Southern Cyprus in 1963 and rejected any attempts to link Türkiye-EU relations with the Cyprus problem.

Tatar blamed Greek Cyprus' leadership for repeated failures in negotiations and reaffirmed the sovereign equality of Turkish Cypriots, refusing to participate in ineffective processes.

He urged the EU to break free from favoring Greek Cyprus and to lift the isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots, a decision made two decades ago.

The TRNC's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the EU Leaders Summit's final declaration, criticizing the EU for perpetuating the island's status quo with its insistence on failed solution proposals.

The ministry accused the EU of supporting the Greek administration and emphasized the need for a two-state solution, considering the inefficacy of current approaches over the past 50 years.
