President Erdogan discusses counterterrorism with KRG officials in Erbil
President Erdogan visits KRG leaders in Erbil to discuss counterterrorism and regional cooperation, emphasizing the importance of unity in combating terrorism and enhancing bilateral ties
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Kurdish Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil on April 22 to discuss counterterrorism, as well as regional and global issues.
Erdogan's visit followed a daylong trip to Baghdad, where he held discussions with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Upon arriving in Erbil, he was greeted by an official ceremony at the airport hosted by Nechirvan Barzani.
Erdogan remarked on Iraq's progress toward a more peaceful state and stated his belief that it is time to address the PKK issue decisively. He emphasized Türkiye's commitment to unity in combating terrorism and expressed his determination to enhance cooperation in this regard.
The president highlighted the significance of recent agreements signed with Iraq, including those pertaining to the Development Road project, which he believes will contribute to the welfare and stability of the entire country. Erdogan stressed the importance of constructive dialogue between the administrations in Baghdad and Erbil, free from external interference.
Erdogan also emphasized Türkiye's interest in bolstering commercial ties with Erbil, particularly through the prompt opening of the Ovakoy-Faysh Khabur Border Gate and the initiation of vehicle crossings at the Derecik-Zeti Border Gate.
Moreover, Erdogan conveyed his confidence in the protection of the rights and interests of the Turkmen people, especially concerning their political representation, in the region.
During his visit, Erdogan also met with Masoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, further underscoring the importance of dialogue and collaboration between Türkiye and Kurdish authorities.
