The ministry emphasized that these statements, which distort historical facts, are also in violation of international law, citing the European Court of Human Rights' recognition of the events of 1915 as subject to legitimate debate.
It further asserted that such biased historical narratives hinder efforts towards reconciliation between the involved communities and fuel extremism, potentially leading to hate crimes.
Calling on all parties to support its proposal for a Joint Historical Commission and to contribute to the ongoing normalization process with Armenia, Türkiye maintains that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia during the period in question occurred amid conflicts with invading Russian forces and internal revolts against Ottoman authorities.
The subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in significant casualties, but Türkiye disputes the term "genocide," instead framing the events as a mutual tragedy involving losses on both sides.
Ankara has persistently advocated for the establishment of a joint commission comprising historians from Türkiye and Armenia, alongside international experts, to address the complex historical issue.
