Turkish UN envoy Yıldız warns of terrorism in Syria

Türkiye issued a strong warning about the ongoing threat posed by the PKK/YPG terrorist organization in Syria on Thursday.

In his speech at the U.N. Security Council session, Türkiye's Permanent Representative to the U.N. Ahmet Yildiz underlined that the PKK/YPG terrorist group continues to pursue a separatist and destabilizing agenda in northeastern Syria. Yildiz stressed that the terrorist group poses a major threat to the territorial integrity and political unity of Syria.

Yildiz once again reaffirmed Türkiye's unwavering position underlining that the PKK/YPG and its separatist ambitions have no place in the future of Syria. He condemned the organization's exploitation of civilian facilities and oppressive actions against the local population.

Yildiz underlined the urgent need for concerted international action to address the multifaceted crisis in Syria, stressing that 14 years into the conflict, Syria remains in a precarious situation. The interconnected deterioration in security, economic, and humanitarian dimensions has been exacerbated by recent tensions in the region, Yildiz pointed out.

Expressing support for the Constitutional Committee, which is an important platform for negotiations between the Assad regime and the opposition, Yildiz called for the committee to convene without delay. Yildiz also expressed support for the U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen's efforts toward a political solution.

Yildiz also underlined the importance of maintaining the “Whole of Syria” approach in order to coordinate humanitarian interventions in accordance with the situation on the ground.

Following Yildiz's remarks, Syria's representative to the U.N., Qusay al-Dahhak, criticized Türkiye and its envoy for referring to the Syrian government as the “regime.” In response, Yildiz stated that Türkiye was not responsible for the start of the conflict and urged the Syrian envoy to focus on advancing the political process.
