EU considers using frozen Russian assets for Ukrainian military supplies

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested on Wednesday that the European Union should explore the idea of using profits from frozen Russian assets to purchase military supplies for Ukraine.

During a speech to the European Parliament, von der Leyen emphasized the need for the EU to take more decisive action on defense policy, stating that while the threat of war for the EU is not immediate, it is a possibility that should be considered.

"The risks of war should not be exaggerated, but they should be prepared for, starting with the urgent task of rebuilding, replenishing, and modernizing member states' armed forces," she remarked.

Von der Leyen also provided a glimpse into a forthcoming European Industrial Defene Strategy that her commission will unveil in the upcoming weeks. She highlighted that one of the primary goals of this strategy would be to prioritize joint procurement to enhance European defence capabilities.

She emphasized that increased efforts in European defence should not detract from the importance of the NATO alliance.
