Volleyball captain Erdem nominated for US Courage Award

Eda Erdem, the captain of both the Turkish National Women's Volleyball Team and Fenerbahce Opet, has been nominated for the International Women of Courage award, presented by the U.S. Department of State.

This accolade recognizes Erdem's significant contributions to empowering women and was announced during a reception hosted by the U.S. Consul General in Istanbul Julie A. Eadeh. Erdem was honored with a plaque for her nomination.

U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake also emphasized Erdem's contribution to women empowerment, stating: "Observing her achievements and efforts in empowering women, I believe Erdem truly deserves this award. She is not only a leading captain of the world's top volleyball team but also dedicates her time to mentoring young women, showing them that anything is achievable."

At the reception, Erdem expressed her pride and gratitude for the nomination. "Being recognized among such strong, important, and successful women adds significant responsibility, but I am fully aware of it," Erdem remarked.

"As a diverse and united team, we are constantly accomplishing great things. This nomination is also a testament to my teammates' hard work, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to them," she added.

Erdem's nomination comes at a time when her career is at a peak, with a statue recently erected in her honor. Reflecting on her journey, Erdem shared, "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would have such a career and life. The realization of the statue, something long-discussed, brings me immense joy every time I pass by it."

Ambassador Flake also highlighted his experiences attending various sports events in Türkiye, expressing his delight in the country's passion for sports. "Being in a country that takes sports seriously and loves it sincerely is a great pleasure for me," he added.

Eadeh, hosting the reception, asserted the significance of the award. "The U.S. Department of State annually gives the 'International Women of Courage' award to women who have excelled in empowering women, human rights, and various disciplines. Captain Eda Erdem's nomination is well-deserved," she said.

Erdem's legacy in sports and beyond continues to inspire. Simla Turker Bayazit, a board member responsible for volleyball at Fenerbahce Club, expressed immense pride in Erdem's achievements.

"Eda Erdem stands as a crucial female figure in Turkish and international sports. Her character and athletic prowess are exemplary. The awards she's receiving are just the beginning. She inspires girls and women everywhere, and as Fenerbahce, honoring her with a statue adds significant value," Bayazit conveyed.

Erdem's recent comments about a potential film or documentary about her life further reflect the impact of her career. While she remains focused on volleyball, the idea excites her. "I don't know if it will happen or if it's wanted, but just the thought is thrilling," Erdem shared.
