France bolsters security for Champions League, Olympics upon threats

France is intensifying security measures in response to threats from Daesh, particularly around the Parc des Princes stadium, as the nation prepares for the Paris Olympics and ongoing Champions League football matches.

This development comes after extremists' resurgence, marked by recent attacks in Moscow and Iran.

French authorities have significantly beefed up security around the stadium, home to the PSG-Barcelona Champions League quarter-final.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the enhanced security, noting that while the threat of an extremist attack is not new, there is no specific information about the target or nature of the potential attacks.

Despite this, France's long experience with tackling extremism has enabled them to thwart two attacks this year, with recent arrests further showcasing their vigilance.

"We live constantly under the threat of terrorists," said Julien, a Paris Saint-Germain fan.

The threat extends beyond France. Spain and Britain have also ramped up security for Champions League matches, reflecting Europe-wide concerns about the extremist's capabilities.

These security concerns are particularly acute as France gears up for the Paris Olympics.

The Olympic Games, set to begin with an unprecedented opening ceremony along the river Seine, are being guarded by 20,000 soldiers and 40,000 police and gendarmes under Operation Sentinelle.

Yet, the situation is complicated by what French President Emmanuel Macron describes as a risk posed by Russia, evidenced by an aggressive cyber-campaign.

French security expert Guillaume Farde emphasizes the importance of democratic resilience in the face of these threats, stating that succumbing to fear plays into the hands of terrorist organizations.

While French government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot assures no "concrete threat" to the PSG-Barcelona match, the heightened security clearly indicates France's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and international guests during these high-profile events.
