Fenerbahce's star striker Edin Dzeko has sparked significant controversy and admiration during the UEFA Conference League quarterfinal against Olympiakos in Greece.

His deliberate display of the Turkish flag on his jersey after facing disapproval from the Greek fans has sparked a broad spectrum of reactions from the media and public in both countries.

The game itself was a roller-coaster, with Olympiakos taking an early lead, scoring three goals by the 57th minute.

However, Fenerbahce responded with a remarkable comeback, narrowing the gap to 3-2, thanks to a penalty by Dusan Tadic and a quick follow-up goal by Irfan Can Kahveci.

Amid the high tensions, Dzeko responded to the jeers and boos from the crowd after a disputed non-call by the referee by pointing to the Turkish flag on his kit, further inciting the crowd at Karaiskakis Stadium.

Greek sports outlets quickly picked up on the incident, branding Dzeko's actions as highly provocative.

"Dzeko's gesture was unnecessary and provoked our fans," remarked Konstantinos Fortounis of Olympiakos, reflecting a sentiment widely covered in the Greek media.

In stark contrast, the reaction in Türkiye was overwhelmingly positive. Turkish media outlets praised Dzeko’s gesture, interpreting it as a bold stand against adversity.

"Dzeko showed his courage and pride by displaying our flag," a Turkish sports commentator reported. The move also made waves on social media, with numerous Turkish fans advocating for the government to offer Dzeko citizenship.
