Maradona's children want to relocate his body to mausoleum

On Thursday, Diego Maradona's family filed a formal request with the Argentine Courts, requesting the relocation of the late football legend's body to a more secure location, as well as the establishment of a mausoleum where admirers can pay their respects.

A secluded cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires housed the soccer star's body. It was transported there in November 2020 amid a grand funeral procession. Only close family members have access to the cemetery.

Veronica Ojeda, the mother of Maradona's youngest son, told local media that the mausoleum, known as "Memorial del Diez," will be open to the public.

"All the heirs request by common agreement to authorize the transfer to his next destination of eternal rest in a much safer place than the current one," said the note presented to the court, signed by Dalma, Gianinna Maradona, and Ojeda on behalf of Diego Maradona Jr.

"And so that all Argentines and citizens of the world can pay homage to our father, who was the greatest Argentine idol."

According to one of the family's lawyers, the relocation is scheduled for or around Oct. 30, which also happens to be the birth date of Argentina's 1986 World Cup champion.
