Aftershocks are still continuing after the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan yesterday afternoon. A total of 55 aftershocks are said to have occurred.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck 12 kilometers (seven miles) deep in the central Ishikawa region of Japan on Friday afternoon.

At least one person lost his life and 23 was injured, Japan's disaster management agency said on Saturday. Aftershocks continued after the earthquake.

55 AFTER SHOCK OCCURRED

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that heavy rain could trigger landslides in the area, while around 55 aftershocks were said to have occurred Saturday morning, which were strong.

"Our staff is checking the damage from the earthquake," an official from Suzu in Ishikawa prefecture, the city most affected, told AFP.

He said that two people trapped in the collapsed buildings were rescued and about 50 people were moved to evacuation centers set up in schools and city hall.
