More than 6 million people face hunger crisis in Sudan, UN says

More than 6 million people in Sudan are at risk of starvation due to the ongoing clashes between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), United Nations (UN) announced.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General, answered the questions of journalists on this issue at the press conference on Wednesday.

Haq informed the media that the hunger situation in Sudan is "out of control" due to the ongoing clashes between the army and paramilitary rapid support forces in Sudan since April 15

"More than 6 million people, or about 13 percent of the population, are at risk of starvation in Sudan," he said.

Spokesman also stated that more than 20 million people across the country are facing “high levels of food insecurity” due to conflicts and economic downturn in the country.

Farhan Haq underlined that more than 855 thousand Sudanese fled the conflicts in the country and fled to neighboring countries.

CLASHES IN SUDAN

The Sudanese army wanted the RSF to be integrated into the army within 2 years, which it once supported but saw as a threat on the grounds that it took an independent stance.

On the other hand, the verbal discussion and tension that started with the RSF's declaration that it could accept this in the process spanning about 10 years after the civilian government turned into an armed conflict between the parties on April 15.

More than 3,000 people have lost their lives and tens of thousands of people have been injured in the conflicts so far.
