Former Brazil footballer Dani Alves denies rape allegations

The former Brazil international footballer, Dani Alves, facing accusations of rape at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022, vigorously denied the charges on the last day of his trial in Spain.

The trial opened on Monday, with the victim testifying for over an hour behind a screen to protect her identity. Alves, renowned for his career with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, asserted that the woman was not obligated to stay and refuted claims of violence, stating, "I am not a violent man."

The woman accused Alves of raping her in a bathroom of the VIP section of the Sutton nightclub in the early hours of Dec. 31, 2022. Alves, arrested three weeks later, has been in detention, facing charges of "sexual assault with penetration."

Prosecutors are pushing for a substantial sentence and compensation, and a verdict is expected in the coming weeks.

During the trial, approximately 20 witnesses testified, including a Brazilian friend of Alves who accompanied him on the night in question.
